Head Librarian Shrew’s “Renewal” Banana Bread
Head Librarian Shrew, architect of the fine amnesty alcove, believes second chances should smell like vanilla.
What landed in my mailbox
“Three bananas past politeness, mushed. Half cup oil, two eggs, teaspoon each baking soda and cinnamon, pinch salt. Fold in walnuts if you trust your patrons. Bake 350°F one hour — no peeking before minute fifty-five; suspense improves character.”
I peeked at minute forty. The loaf sulked; I apologized to the oven. Second loaf: Shrew-level discipline. Crumb tender as an overdue forgiveness.
Carl’s verdict: Four stars for the recipe, five for the metaphor. I stirred in a handful of chocolate chips — the librarian’s note only said “if morale requires.” It did.
